Hormone Imbalance & Autoimmune Disease

10287621_sWhat we eat and the exercise we do only plays a small part in our overall health. After all, there is some comfort in believing that if you just eat less and/or exercise more you can get yourself on the road to health, and even look better in the process. Hormones, enzymes, and bacteria actually rule the roost, though. Autoimmune diseases place our health further out of our control. 

There is increasing body of evidence to suggest that  hormones may be closely involved in the onset of autoimmune diseases. Most will focus on the stress and sex hormone imbalances. Very few have even heard of the inflammatory hormone – etiocholanolone. It is formed from both the stress and sex hormones defined as a short-lived pyrogenic hormone. Etiocholanolone is short-lived only in a healthy person. Bacteria in a Ghetto Gut will convert bile into toxic secondary bile which prevents the elimination of etiocholanolone from your body. Etiocholanolone then continues to stimulate the cytokines involved in autoimmune diseases.

Which means bacteria can play a role with our hormones. Badly behaving bacteria lead to inflammation, which causes the body to react through the NEI Supersystem. It’s this reaction that causes the negative health effects. It’s a natural reaction, but we don’t live in natural environments. Many assume we don’t get enough of the healthy bacteria (probiotics) in our diets that our bodies need to function properly. When in actuality the biological terrain influences the behavior of even the good bacteria. If you have a Ghetto Gut full of bacteria, their behavior will change to match the environment. Good bacteria become bad bacteria and bad bacteria become worse, then we’ll pay the price. You are not in control of these microbes, they are in control of you. The biological terrain controls them.

Bad Enzymes Produce “Inflammation” Hormones

There are several prevailing notions when it comes to hormones. The first is the hormone being prescribed or supplemented stays that hormone. Stress hormones stay stress hormone while sex hormones stay sex hormones. The second is the body will get rid of it, if the hormones levels get too high. Some even think high levels of hormones are good. The third is your body will know what to do with it. An example would be DHEA, a very popular and frequently used because it can convert into either a stress or sex hormone. But DHEA has a darker side.

Why is DHEA recommended? Likely many are taking it for hot flashes. Has anyone ever mentioned the possibility that the hot flashes or feeling warm all the time could be from an inflammatory hormone?

The first notion is false because of the latter notions. The body will use enzymes to convert hormones to the next upstream hormone. The more the enzymes that are available the more hormones are converted upstream. Your body does know what to do with hormones. It takes the next available enzyme and makes the next available hormone.

Then there are the inflammation hormones, which are ignored because they are neither a stress nor sex hormone. DHEA’s dark side is that has a very short life before converting into a stress or sex hormone. Those recommending DHEA stop at the stress or sex hormone conversion. Convinced of the notion that your body knows what to do with it. They are correct but at the same time oblivious to the consequences. DHEA is only one step away from the inflammatory hormone etiocholanolone. To understand this, you should understand the relationship between enzymes and hormones. An example of the pathways of steroidogenesis (hormone formation) with the different enzymes is shown in this figure below:

An Enzyme is any of the various proteins, originating from living cells and capable of producing certain chemical changes in organic substances by breaking them down or changing them, as in digestion, neurotransmitter regulation and hormone formation. Without getting changed itself, enzymes catalyze or speed up chemical reactions. Enzymes are catalysts, they make chemical reactions go faster than they normally would so metabolism can take place at a useful rate. Almost every single process in a your body needs enzymes to occur.

Before you run out to alkalize you body, you should know the enzymes in the small intestine require a pH of 8.5 while the stomach is 3.5 -4.0 or the colon 6.6 – 6.8. When enzymes in the colon are exposed to pH below 6.6, they activate and enhance the activity of bacterial toxins from even the “good” bacteria residing there.

But hormones are informational molecules, in other words they travel through the blood to signal distant parts of the body to do something. They both fit together with their target by a lock and key fit, in other words their form or shape is very important to the way they function. It only works on cells that have the proper receptor or “docking station” on their surfaces. Any thing that changes their shape, changes the way they function.

Different Types of Enzymes

Enzymes are chemicals fashioned by the body to break a complex substance into its minor components. There are many different types of enzymes. The set of enzymes made in a cell determines which metabolic pathways happening in that cell. Enzymes are tremendously selective in what they work on and speed up only a small number of reactions from among many possibilities.

Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates – acid enzymes from the stomach and alkaline enzymes from the pancreas; enzymes that break down and lysozyme that break down fats and carbohydrates.

Neurotransmitter Enzymes

It depends on how you count neurotransmitters, but there maybe 30 – 100 different neurotransmitter types, with 14 of them doing 99% of the work. An example of this is the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is produced in numerous types of nerve endings through out the gastrointestinal tract as well as muscles and the brain. This is the particular synapse or nerve ending that activates the contraction of the smooth muscle in the digestive tract as well as contraction of skeletal muscles.

Enzymatic degradation (deactivation) of neurotransmitters: An example of this type of enzyme is acetylcholinesterase. For example, acetylcholinesterase is the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine into choline and acetate. There is a specific enzyme changes the structure of the every neurotransmitter so it is not recognized by the receptor.

In every function of every cell in the body, enzymes are in attendance and demonstrate their action. However, the digestive enzymes get the lion’s share of the attention. Neurotransmitter enzymes get very little attention. But the enzymes that control hormone get absolutely no attention. But how many consider hormones to be their biggest problem?

Steroidogenesis (Hormone producing) Enzymes

Steroidogenesis is the biological process by which steroid hormones are generated from the cholesterol building block and transformed into other steroid hormones by enzymes.[i]

Cholesterol + Enzyme (Cholesterol monooxygenase) = Pregnenolone

Cholesterol is essential for sex hormone production and a healthy stress response. Diets that cut out cholesterol, put the body at a disadvantage when trying to conceive. Other metabolic factors such as malabsorption, insulin resistance, and thyroid conditions can lead to top dow disruption if homeostatic parameters are not met.

Why is this graphic different from the one above? The number of actual enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and immune stimulating compounds in the body is mind-boggling. They try to keep it simple.

Progestogen is another name for progesterone. The progestogens are one of the five major classes of steroid hormones, from which estrogens, androgens, mineralocorticoids, and glucocorticoids are formed by enzymes.  Progestogens serve as precursors to all steroid hormones – thus all-human tissues use enzymes to produce steroids must first convert cholesterol to pregnenolone with cholesterol monooxygenase. This conversion controls how many hormones are made.[ii] Which means low cholesterol equals low hormones. From the original cholesterol, different hormones are made in different organs through out the body.

Locations of human steroidogenesis:

  • Corticosteroids are produced in the adrenal cortex.
  • Estrogen and progesterone are made primarily in the ovary and in the placenta during pregnancy, and testosterone in the testes.
  • Testosterone is also converted into estrogen to regulate the supply of each, in the bodies of both females and males.
  • In addition, certain neurons and glia in the central nervous system (CNS) express the enzymes that are required for the local synthesis of pregnane neurosteroids,

After menopause or hysterectomy, the adrenals should make all the progesterone your body needs. Which as you can see from the chart above. Progesterone can be made into any hormone. But it requires an enzyme and the proper terrain.

Bad Enzymes equal Bad Hormones

The body is a chemistry laboratory. There are many things that can make this process go awry. The biological terrain impacts every biochemical process in the body including… ENZYMES. There are hundreds if not thousands of enzyme processes, which take place in the body. Many are so specific that they are like complex square pegs that need to “fit” into specific square holes in order to carry out their duty. If biological terrain in the blood, gut, or in any other part of the body is off balance even a little, some important pegs are not “fitting” their respective slots.

How specific are hormones and enzymes? Think about the last time you had a key made that did not work.

Bile salts circulate in the liver and intestines several times each day. In a Ghetto Gut, Clostridia (normal species of bacteria in the gut) convert bile salts into toxic bile salts. Toxic secondary bile acid levels are damaging to the cells lining the small intestine and cause extensive mucosal damage of the stomach and esophagus. This is more harmful than acid reflux alone. The major result of secondary bile salts is the formation of lithocholic acid. Lithocholic acid competitively inhibits etiocholanolone elimination occurring in the liver. This results in increased levels of etiocholanolone promoting autoimmune stimulation and hot flashes or feeling hot all the time.

As the biological terrain shifts in a bad way, fatty acids from which hormones are made change their shape and the response they generate. The hormone no longer fits in the receptor site signaling more enzyme production. Setting off a domino chain reaction up and down the hormone pathway. Shifts in the biological terrain changes enzyme function and thus life itself begins to suffer.

Lectins have the ability to dock to the hormone receptor stimulating the gland but unable to produce any hormone.

Inflammation can also damage gene where the enzyme is produced. Genetic defects are known very early in life. However, inflammatory damage to the gene can occur later when the NEI Supersystem no longer regulates the immune system.

Hormone + Enzyme = Upstream hormone

When the Gene is functioning properly, it makes 100% of the enzyme, which makes 100% of the Upstream hormone. Now, if the gene is damaged by inflammation or the biological terrain changes the enzymes or hormones shape, it can’t make as much of the Upstream hormone as it normally would.

Hormone + Damaged Enzyme = 65% of Upstream hormone

This makes me think of my under graduate chemistry lab. We did a lab experiment that was done with a specific set of ingredients in a specific sequence which in theory should have made a specific amount of stuff. Which was compared to the theoretical amount if everything was perfectly done. In reality, it was more like potions class at Hogwarts. The same thing happens in our body with changes in a Ghetto Gut, the biological terrain and the NEI supersystem.

Damaged Hormone + Damaged Enzyme = 25% of Upstream hormone

The first step to living a healthier life is realizing that you’re not in charge. The hormones, enzymes, and bacteria are in full control. The bad news is that living healthier may not be as easy as you’ve been told. The good news is that knowing who’s in charge equips you with the information you need to start taking steps in the right direction. Hormones, enzymes, and bacteria aren’t to be trifled with, you send them the wrong signals, and eventually it will catch up with you.   1. I couldn’t agree more with the fact that living healthier is not as easy as we’ve been told specially If we are in a chronic state of disease. We can know the root cause of the problem but how to address it properly in order to have permanent good health outcome, that is another story. (anyway in my humble opinion). There is so much information out there, that we need to dicern the good from the bad information. Dicernment becomes more difficult to have when we are in a chronic stage of disease.
    Dr. Dave this is in my opinion a very powerful and more in depth article. It gives some explanation of why we do have what we have where we can’t find it anywhere. Thank you for that!
    Where does the neurotransmitters fit into all this. You mentioned neurotransmitter enzymes has very little attention. So is it the key?
